Affordable 11+ tutoring

Frequently asked questions

What is the 11+?

The 11+ is an examination taken by students in the beginning of year 6 for entrance to grammar schools. Currently for the grammar schools in Plymouth there are two exams - English reading comprehension, and Maths, both of which are multiple choice. *Please note the exam for the boys for entrance to Devonport High School for Boys also has a written assessment element.

Entrance to grammar schools is competitive and so it is advisable for your child to start preparing for the 11+ examination in advance. At Let's Do This Tutoring we offer sessions for students currently year 5 and also for year 4 for students and parents who would find the extra preparation time helpful.

How do the sessions work?

The group sessions will focus on building Maths and English skills and as the year progresses we will begin to tackle 11+ style questions and eventually begin looking at mock exams.

Home learning will be set for your child and an answer sheet will be provided so you can mark from home for ease and immediate feedback. There is no consequence to not completing the home learning however it is highly recommended. For the best chances of success a dual approach of tutor sessions and learning at home is required.

How much does tutoring cost?

Small group sessions of 11+ tutoring cost £15 per child for an hour session. I recommend block booking per term to ensure you always have a space each week and don't miss out, however pay-as-you-go is also available.

You can make a term payment, or pay for a session after your child has attended the induction session. To book your induction session select the 'Book Now' page.

Individual 1:1 sessions will be £30 per hour

How do drop offs and pick ups work?

Please do not arrive for your tutoring session more than 10 minutes in advance. I will be there to collect your child from reception and we will walk together as a group to the classroom for our session.

Please pick up your child promptly after their session has ended, they will be ready to collect from reception.

Is my child a suitable candidate for the 11+ exam?

As a general rule of thumb your child should be at an above average level for their year group in English (writing and reading) and Maths. The best way to gauge this is to speak to their school teacher. Another important factor in determining your child's suitability is their attitude toward learning and a desire to take the 11+ exam.

The entry to grammar schools is very competitive and I do not guarantee your child will be successful. However I promise to work hard to support them and prepare them for the types of questions seen in the 11+ exams.

I will provide regular feedback as we progress as a group throughout the year, and I ask you mark home learning with a provided answer sheet so you will also see how your child is getting on with 11+ style questions.

Where can I learn more about you?

I am a fully qualified maths and science secondary school teacher with an in date DBS check and insurance (copies available to view on request).

What should my child bring?

The basics such as pens and pencils, learning resources, and exercise books will be provided. Your child is welcome to bring their own pencil case if preferred.

It is advisable they have a suitable bag, or plastic folder, to take home any forms or home learning sheets.

Please note - I am not able to provide drinking water, so please ensure your child brings a drinks bottle if this would make them more comfortable.
